Finding Calm in an Overwhelmed World: How energy healing and intentional rest may support stress resilience
May 29, 2026 ● By Natural Awakenings Milwaukee
According to the American Psychological Association’s 2022 Stress in America Report, 76% of adults reported at least one physical or emotional symptom related to stress in the previous month. Symptoms such as muscle tension, shallow breathing, irritability, fatigue and poor sleep are often normalized as simply part of modern life. Over time, ongoing stress may keep the nervous system in a prolonged state of alertness, limiting the body’s ability to fully rest, recover and heal.
Energy healing modalities such as Reiki, sound healing and other biofield-based practices are increasingly being explored as supportive tools for stress reduction and nervous system regulation. During an energy healing session, practitioners use hands-on or hands-above techniques with the intention of supporting relaxation, energetic balance and the body’s natural healing response. Participants frequently report deep relaxation, emotional release and decreased physical tension.
Emerging research suggests that Reiki may help support nervous system regulation, including the body’s stress response and relaxation pathways. Several meta-analyses published between 2017 and 2024 reported statistically significant reductions in anxiety, pain and perceived stress among individuals who received Reiki compared to control groups.
While energy healing is not intended to replace medical or mental health care, many individuals find it to be a meaningful complementary practice that helps them reconnect with a sense of calm, presence and inner awareness. In a culture that often rewards constant productivity, creating intentional space for rest and regulation may be more important than ever.
