The Sherman Phoenix Rises

The Sherman Phoenix, a unique marketplace comprised of 29 small businesses-of-color offering diverse foods, wellness services, art and cultural activities, opened November 30 in the Sherman Park neighborhood. Visitors can enjoy an array of foods including vegetarian and vegan options, along with yoga, karate and fitness, apothecary services, art and more.

The Sherman Phoenix effort was spearheaded by developers Juli Kaufmann and JoAnne Johnson-Sabir and came to fruition through public and private partnerships. It was built on the site of the former BMO Harris bank that was damaged in a fire during civil unrest in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood in August 2016. The Sherman Phoenix project aims to foster change by transforming the eastern gateway to the Sherman Park neighborhood in Milwaukee into a safe, welcoming space that supports small businesses-of-color.
