Traditional Tribal Dance Combines Exercise and Artistic Movement

Milwaukee-area residents are invited to participate in a free demonstration of poi, a traditional tribal dance involving tethered balls swung in rhythmic patterns. Marilyn Besasie, founder of Milwaukee’s fire-dancing school, You Are spHERE, and a certified poi instructor from the Temple of Poi in San Francisco, will lead the demo from 10 to 11 a.m., July 19, at the Kelly Senior Center, in Cudahy.

Besasie, who has taught classes since 2003 and is the founder of local fire-dancing troupe SnowFire, notes that poi is both intensely tribal and sharply modern and can hypnotize an audience. As a form of exercise, it is an excellent way to increase agility, she notes. “People of every age, from children to the older adults in our community, need to get and stay fit for a long and healthy life. Poi is a new form of physical fitness that combines exercise and artistic movement.”

During the demonstration, Besasie will help participants explore a variety of easy poi movements to increase physical dexterity and mental acuity. Comfortable clothing and non-skid shoes are recommended. Equipment will be provided.
