Victory Garden Initiative Launches Fruity Nutty 5 Contest

The second annual Fruity Nutty 5 Contest, sponsored by Victory Garden Initiative (VGI), in Milwaukee, is underway. Through February 7, communities in Milwaukee County can apply via mail or email to receive fruit and nut trees awarded by VGI. Five neighborhoods will be chosen and each will receive up to 30 fruit and nut trees, such as hazelnut, pear, cherry, apple and currant.

Winners will be announced at VGI’s Fruity Nutty Affair, February 22, and VGI volunteers will plant the trees later in the spring. The contest aims to not only provide orchards that will flourish with locally sourced and nutritious food, but to also protect the environment, improve public health and strengthen the community.

VGI is a nonprofit that promotes sustainable and socially just food systems, reintegrates human and food ecology and provides urban agricultural and garden projects.

Location: 1845 N. Farwell Ave., Ste. 100. For more information or to enroll in the contest, call 414-431-0888 or visit VictoryGardenInitiative.org.
