Growing Business and Gardening Skills

Registration is now open for the 2013 Agricorp program, a weeklong summer program running from July 29 to August 3 that teaches youth ages 12 to 17 business-planning skills through organic gardening. Throughout the week, Agricorp members will receive hands-on education in the garden, learning how to grow veggies in a program that incorporates business skills that can be applied to any future endeavors. At the end of the week, the group harvests their crop, creates a marketing and advertising plan and has the chance to sell it with Wellspring at the Saturday West Bend Farmers’ Market. The class meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 7 to 10 a.m. for the market.

“The Agricorp program is an early opportunity for young people to develop business-planning skills that they will continue to build upon throughout their lives,” says Wellspring Executive Wellspring Inc. West BendDirector Angela Rester. “At the same time, they gain the knowledge and ability to grow their own food that leads to greater awareness of our environment and food system.”

Wellspring is a certified organic farm and CSA, as well as a nonprofit education and retreat center with a mission to inspire and teach people to grow, prepare and eat healthy food.
