Natural Awakenings Milwaukee Magazine

Letter from Publisher

Welcome to the premiere issue of Natural Awakenings of Milwaukee, your free local monthly magazine for natural health and sustainable living.

Each month we will bring you cutting-edge information, by well-known national and local experts, on health, wellness, fitness, nutrition, personal growth, creative expression and sustainable living. Our timely local news briefs and calendar listings will alert you to the best of what is happening in the Milwaukee area and open doors to networking with others in our growing healthy living community. We will strive to make this magazine your primary go-to resource for local businesses and services that cater to all things related to a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

What began 17 years ago as a homegrown newsletter in Naples, Florida, founded by CEO Sharon Bruckman, has expanded into a growing family of 85 locally owned magazines reaching 3 million readers in communities across the United States and Puerto Rico. We are delighted to bring this local edition to Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties.

Having grown up in Milwaukee, I returned a few years ago after many years away because I value being close to family in a place we can all enjoy life together, one that’s both affordable and filled with nurturing amenities. I was delighted to discover the vibrant community of natural and holistic practitioners here. More, Milwaukee and Wisconsin have become world pioneers in sustainability.

This month we spotlight “Aquaponics – Milwaukee’s Critical 21st Century Industry” and learn how Rebecca Nelson from Nelson and Pade, Will Allen of Growing Power, and James Godsil of Sweet Water Organics are all working to change the future of sustainable, organic agriculture.

How appropriate that in the midst of summer’s bounty, this month’s articles on Natural Foods respond to peoples’ quest to know where their food comes from and how to select healthier, more nutritious food. Should we buy “natural,” “local” or “organic”? Lisa Marshall explores thoughtful viewpoints in “America’s Growing Food Revolution.” Healthy eating extends to our pets as well, and Dr. Jodie Gruenstern points us to local resources in “Buy Local, Eat Fresh – Even for Pets."

A big thank-you goes to our advertisers and distribution locations for your enthusiastic support; none of this would be possible without you and we are grateful to you all. We ask that everyone please support these local businesses when you shop for needed products or services, and mention that you, too, are a fan of Natural Awakenings.

We welcome your participation in this community-minded magazine and invite your ideas, insights and feedback. Please send your news, calendar listings and local story ideas to [email protected]. Tell us what a healthy, sustainable community means to you. Let’s have fun with this new connection as we learn and grow together.

In love, joy, health and peace,

Gabriella Buchnik, Publisher
