For Tammi Kapitanski, healing has never been about applying the same formula to every person who walks through the door. It begins by listening.

“Show up as you are. Let’s see how we can support you,” says Tammi, owner of Remedy Within, in Elm Grove. “Sometimes you just need connection or community.”

That philosophy has guided Tammi throughout 26 years of offering massage therapy, crystal healing, intuitive readings and an integrative approach to wellness. Six years ago, Remedy Within expanded in a new direction when Tammi and her husband opened the crystal shop and community space.

The expansion came during an uncertain time. After the building where Tammi rented space changed ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic, she needed a new location. An opportunity arose in downtown Elm Grove, and her husband, Jason, encouraged her to create the crystal shop clients had been requesting for years.

The result is a multifaceted wellness destination with a retail shop, space for classes and education and three treatment rooms used by massage therapists and other practitioners.

Looking at the Whole Person to Address Physical and Emotional Needs

Massage remains at the heart of Tammi’s work, but her sessions may extend beyond addressing tight muscles or physical discomfort. She considers what clients are experiencing physically as well as what may be happening emotionally or during a significant period of their lives.

“When a client comes in, we talk about where they are at in that moment, what they are experiencing physically and mentally, then expand into where they are emotionally if they are open to exploring that part of themselves.” she explains.

Depending on the individual, Tammi may incorporate crystals, essential oils and energy work into massage. Clients also lie on an amethyst BioMat with infrared heat during her sessions.

Her approach has developed partly through her own experiences with physical challenges, intuitive sensitivity and the guidance of mentors. “It’s not just a physical approach to massage therapy,” she says. “It’s so much more spiritual. It’s an emotional component.”

Rather than beginning with a rigid treatment plan, Tammi says she holds space, listens and allows clients to begin wherever they are.

For someone curious about Reiki or other forms of energy work, that may simply mean experiencing a session and observing how it feels. Tammi says clients often describe feeling relaxed, calm, grounded and supported afterward. Those who want to explore their experiences more deeply have an opportunity to talk about what arose during the session.

Finding What Resonates

Crystals, minerals and stones fill Remedy Within’s retail space, but Tammi says the goal is not to convince every visitor that they need one.

“We don’t push crystals,” she says. Instead, she encourages visitors to walk through the shop and see what speaks to them. She then shares insight as to what properties the stone holds. 

Cards accompanying the crystals offer information about the qualities traditionally associated with each stone, allowing customers to explore whether the meaning resonates with what they are experiencing in their own lives.

That same spirit of curiosity extends throughout Remedy Within. Massage therapy, energy work, intuitive services, hypnotherapy, crystals and other offerings provide different entry points depending on an individual’s interests and needs.

Turning Curiosity Into Empowerment

Education is another important piece of Remedy Within’s mission. Classes introduce topics such as intuition, pendulums, crystals, energy and personal development, giving people an opportunity to ask questions and explore practices that may initially feel unfamiliar.

Tammi views everyday intuition as an accessible starting point. People may sense the mood of someone entering a room, feel drawn toward a joyful person or suddenly think of a friend just before the person calls. Classes encourage participants to become more aware of these experiences and explore what intuition means to them.

“Let’s clarify that. Let’s explain it. Let’s introduce you to what this could actually mean for you,” she says. For Tammi, education also helps others replace apprehension with understanding.

When You’re Not Sure Where to Begin

Perhaps most importantly, Remedy Within is designed to be a place where visitors do not have to arrive knowing exactly what they need. Someone may come for a massage, browse for a gift, attend a class or simply have a conversation.

Tammi notes, “Customers often express that they feel so comfortable here, they naturally open up and spend time talking with our staff who holds space for them when they need someone to listen.”

That reflects the idea at the center of her work: “heal thyself.”

“We are our own inner healer. We have the answers within us,” Tammi says. “Sometimes it’s prompting the right question or getting someone to think and really take a second to tune into themselves and trust their own intuition.”
