Microgreens Kits Help Cultivate Nutrition Throughout the Coming Year

Dec 01, 2021 12:00AM ● By Natural Awakenings Milwaukee
Microgreens—shoots of vegetables picked just after the first leaves form—have become rock stars of the produce world. Although they’re similar to sprouts, these pint-sized plants pack a concentrated punch of nutrients and flavor compared to their mature counterparts.

Microgreens can be grown indoors, year-round in any space, even in small apartments. All that’s needed is a sunny window. Microgreens are ready to snip and eat within seven to 10 days. Just in time for the holidays, Il Bosco—an eco-boutique in Milwaukee’s Third Ward—makes it easy and convenient to give the gift of nutrition with their new microgreens kits, made in-house with environmentally conscious materials and quality seeds.

Each kit consists of a wood growing-box lined with metal (zinc). Customers can choose either a square or rectangular shape. The kit includes the box, an Il Bosco blend of soil/coconut coir, five small glass vials of assorted seeds, a mister, shears to harvest the greens, and a microgreens guide that contains complete information about the greens you are growing and all of the other greens available at Il Bosco.

“All you need to supply is water. We also have kits that come in a hemp bag, and you can use your own recycling as growing containers,” explains Il Bosco co-owner Christa Cianciolo. “We will be carrying about 35 different varieties of microgreens seeds so you can refill your glass seed containers at the store when you need more.”

The microgreens kits range from $40 to $80. They come wrapped in burlap and a bow, ready for giving.

Microgreens provide healthy touches to any culinary creations. Almost any leafy green or vegetable variety can be grown as microgreens: kale, arugula, collards, basil, cilantro, radicchio, broccoli, sunflower and more. Each has a different flavor and texture and can be used as salad toppers, in smoothies, on sandwiches and wraps, and in soups.

Il Bosco, Italian for “the forest”, offers recycled, repurposed cruelty-free furniture, home furnishings, jewelry and accessories. They also sell plants and provide a service to install live plant walls into businesses and homes.

Il Bosco is located at 225 S. 2nd St., Milwaukee. For more information, call 414-212-8723 or visit IlBoscoMKE.com.
