Victory Garden Initiative Expands Classroom
and Event Space

Victory Garden Initiative (VGI), an organization dedicated to building a community-based, socially just and environmentally sustainable food system for everyone, is expanding their urban farm campus through the purchase of a building across the street from their urban farm in the Harambee neighborhood. The building, which was originally a Pabst Pub, has a layout that matches VGI’s need to provide an indoor classroom for year-round programming; event space to serve farm-to-table meals; and office space.

The purchase is expected to be complete by April, and then VGI will begin updates and renovations to the building. The space will be ready for programs in late summer/early fall. “Purchasing this building helps us work towards our goal of having an urban farm campus in the Harambee neighborhood around our farm,” says Rheanna Smith, VGI’s marketing and development manager. “We will welcome families with weekly meals, provide children with a healthy summer and after-school snacks as part of an after-school homework club program, enhance workforce development to include green infrastructure careers and extended internships, and extend service to families with a community supported agriculture (CSA) program.”
